vibrant history
born in Brazil in 1962, the name havaianas means "hawaiians" in Portuguese—a nod to laid-back island life. inspired by the clean, minimalist style of Japanese zori sandals, havaianas brings together zen simplicity and Brazilian spirit.
a star is born
a traditional Japanese sandal with cloth straps and woven rice straw soles. Havaianas replaced the straw with rubber, updated the design to look modern, and the rest is history! So where did the name “Havaianas” come from? Well, in Portuguese, the name translates to “Hawaiians” and it was chosen to honour the tropical and glamourous vacay destination with endless summer vibes.
1962 Brazil
not to brag, but Havaianas invented the original rubber flip flop! here’s our proof: in 1966, Havaianas’ parent company, Alpargatas, registered the patent of our now world famous rubber thong!
